The Meacham Elevator & Raskob's Elevators

Friday, Aug 30, 2024 at 10:00AM Repeating event

Humboldt and District Gallery

“The Meacham Elevator” by ceramic artists Bonnie Gilmour and Charley Farrero is a meditation in clay on what they experienced after the destruction of the grain elevator that once stood over their home village of Meacham, SK.
Everyone is invited to join Bonnie and Charley for a reception and artist talk on Wednesday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Gallery.
The presentation of this exhibit is made possible by funding from SK Arts and Sask Lotteries.

Excerpts from the Artists’ Statement:
“Bonnie’s ceramic tiles are sketches that convey the golden glory days of our province.”
“Charley’ fantastical sculptures resonate with the beholder, stories of fact, fiction and fun.”
“The ceramic sculptures presented remind us that the theoretical nature of clay, whether shaped conceptually or functionally, is to make the local permanent.”

Raskob's Elevators
Greg Raskob had always been a local history buff, and when he began taking photographs after his retirement in 1984, he found his subject matter in the province’s barns, homesteads, churches and elevators. Greg described elevators as “like lighthouses of Saskatchewan. You could always see an elevator ahead of you when you were driving. It was a natural thing to see these structures as you drove through the province.” Although Greg had photographed sites all over the world, the landscape of Saskatchewan is where he contributed most to the documentation of vanishing buildings. Greg passed away in 2014 at the age of 89.
Greg Raskob donated his collection of photographs to the Humboldt and District Gallery’s permanent collection, and we are pleased to display a selection of them as part of this exhibit.
